Not gently… never gently.

There’s a brief moment of regret (why did I choose mornings again?), followed by the reality check—people are counting on you to wake them up.

Kettle on. Strong coffee. Quick scan of the news, weather, and anything trending. You’re not just chatting—you’re setting the tone for someone’s entire morning.

4:30 AM – Show Prep Mode

This is where the magic starts to form.

You’re pulling together:

Talking points

Local stories

Music playlists

Little personal anecdotes (because that’s what makes it you)

It’s not just about filling time—it’s about creating moments. A buzz. A rhythm. You’re juggling music, timing, messages, and your own thoughts… all in real time.

One minute you’re introducing a song, the next you’re chatting about a random childhood memory or reacting to something happening right now.

And the weird part? You’re talking to thousands… but it feels like one person.

6:00 AM – Finding Your Flow

By now, you’re in the zone.

The nerves (if there were any) have gone. You’re flowing, reacting, improvising. Maybe a listener message sparks a whole new conversation. Maybe something goes wrong—and you roll with it anyway.

Because that’s radio. It’s alive. It’s unpredictable. And that’s what makes it brilliant.

6:55 AM – Wrapping It Up

The final link. The last song.

You sign off knowing you’ve been part of people’s mornings—the school runs, the commutes, the quiet cups of tea.

And that feeling? Wild, wild times!

11:00 AM
I rise when I feel like it. Not when an alarm tells me. Not when society demands it. When I decide the world is ready for me.

Usually that coincides with a rare beam of Manchester sunlight slicing through the drizzle and gently illuminating my face like I’m in a perfume advert. It dances across the imaginary gold leaf on my headboard, and for a brief moment, everything feels… cinematic.

Except Thursdays.

Thursdays, I’m violently dragged back to reality by the dustmen launching glass into a bin like they’re auditioning for the Olympics. I’ve complained, of course. Explained that 11 AM is simply uncivilised for a man of my vocal importance. But no. Apparently, society must function.

Selfish.

11:30 AM
I summon Arthur, my butler.

Now, Arthur is a busy man, so I trust he’s already completed the morning checklist:
Bins out, discreetly. We can’t have the neighbours clocking the suspicious number of empty “posh supermarket” items.
Guard dogs fed. Volume and Gain. Loyal. Fierce. Slightly confused Labradors in reality, but we move.
Jaguar polished. Not a streak. Not a smudge. I expect showroom brilliance before I even consider stepping into it.

I nod approvingly. Arthur nods back. We understand each other. Mostly because he is, in fact, me… and the Jaguar is a memory from 2008.

6:30 PM: The Arrival
Arthur drops me at the Nifty studios. By “drops me,” I mean I park slightly wonky because I misjudge the curb again.

Still, I don’t walk in. I glide.

Inside, the atmosphere is electric. Interns gather. There’s reverence. There’s awe. One gently dabs my forehead with a chilled silk cloth. Another feeds me grapes. Seedless, naturally. I nod as if this is standard practice. Because it is. In my head.

6:55 PM: The Reality Check
The silk cloth? Damp bog roll from the studio toilet.
The Jaguar? Making a noise that suggests it’s about three revs away from becoming modern art.

I blink.

I’m in a Vauxhall Corsa. Engine off. Sitting in the car park. Finishing a chip barm that’s been absolutely drowned in vinegar. It’s soaking through the paper, through my jeans, possibly into my soul.

I found the money for it under the seat.

There is no glide. There is only a light jog through sideways rain because I’ve forgotten my lanyard again and I’m now trying to break into my own workplace while protecting my hair, which has the structural integrity of damp tissue.

6:58 PM: The “Anna” Factor
I enter the studio… and the glamour takes another direct hit.

Anna has been in.

Now, I don’t know what’s happened in that room, but it looks like a crisp-based crime scene. Cheese and onion packets everywhere. Digestive crumbs scattered like confetti. There’s evidence of what can only be described as a baguette incident directly over the mixing desk.

I have two minutes.

Two. Minutes.

I’m blowing crumbs out of faders like I’m resuscitating them. I’m wiping unidentified sticky patches off the mic with a mystery wet wipe I found on the floor. I don’t ask questions anymore. I just survive.

7:00 PM
Showtime.

I hit the fader, which responds with a noise that suggests it’s seen things… terrible things.

Then the voice goes on.

“Good evening, Greater Manchester…”

Smooth. Effortless. Like I’ve just stepped out of a private jet instead of a slightly damp Corsa with a vinegar problem.

The first song starts. I immediately pick a rogue crisp fragment off the mute button and flick it away like a seasoned professional.

This is broadcasting. This is craft. This is… absolute chaos dressed up as confidence.

Somewhere between links, I mentally prepare for the inevitable arrival of Simon Walker and whatever bold fashion decision he’s made today.

Kappa tracksuit? Full commitment? No irony?

Respect, in a slightly confused sort of way.

And that’s it. That’s the glamorous life.

Not quite champagne and silk cloths…

But definitely crumbs, chaos, and a microphone that somehow makes it all sound brilliant.

My day usually kicks off in the most British way possible… with a good brew. There’s something about that first cuppa in the morning that feels like the brain finally switching on. Breakfast tends to be fairly simple, either a bowl of Shredded Wheat Bitesize or a couple of slices of toast. Nothing fancy, just enough fuel to get the day moving.

Once that’s done, I try to get a bit of movement in before the real work begins. Some days it’s a walk to clear the head, other days it’s a session at the gym. Either way, it helps wake me up properly and gets me in the right mindset for the day ahead.

After I’m back home and have had a shower (nobody wants a radio presenter who smells like the gym), it’s time to start preparing for the show. This is where the creative part of the job really kicks in. I’ll spend time writing links and planning what I’m going to talk about on air. A lot of the inspiration comes from things I’ve noticed over the last few days, stories in the news, something funny I’ve heard, or even just a random thought that pops into my head.

If something makes me laugh or feels like it might make someone else smile, it usually ends up going straight into the notebook. I’ve learned the hard way that if you don’t write those little ideas down immediately, they vanish just as quickly as they appeared.

Before heading out the door, I always make sure to spend some proper time with my wife and daughter. That bit of the day is important. Radio might be a huge part of my life, but family is always the centre of it.

Then it’s off to the studio.

Being a radio presenter is something I genuinely love. Every day is different, every show has its own moments, and there’s nothing quite like knowing you might have brightened someone’s day with a song, a story, or even a slightly daft comment.

For me, that’s what makes it the best job in the world. Making people smile for a living… I can’t think of a better role.

People imagine the life of a radio presenter is glamorous. They picture a rock-and-roll lifestyle. Fame. Fortune. Wild parties with celebrities who insist on buying you drinks while whispering, “Play my song again, Al.”

The reality is slightly different.

My alarm goes off early enough to annoy the sun. Joanne usually puts her foot in the small of my back and pushes me off the edge of the bed. By the time most people are thinking about opening their first email, I’m already pointing the car toward the studios of Nifty UK Radio in Oldham, wondering if the kettle will beat me there or if Tim (Producer extraordinaire) has already had three coffees and reorganised the entire show plan.

We arrive about two hours before we go on air. Two hours might sound excessive to the untrained ear, but this is the delicate art of radio preparation. A show meeting happens. It’s a serious creative summit where the nation’s most pressing issues are discussed.

Questions like:

“Is it acceptable to eat a curry for breakfast?”

“Why do seagulls look like they’re judging you?”

“Can we legally start a debate about whether Stockport counts as ‘posh’?”

Tim usually sits there calmly, sipping coffee and pretending he works with a professional. He likes to think he is the brains of the operation, while I’m essentially the labrador that runs into the room shouting things.

The meeting usually involves plotting what we’ll talk about between 10am and 1pm. We call this “show prep.” What it actually means is finding stories weird enough to make people in traffic spit their brew out laughing.

Then the red light comes on and it's Showtime!

For three hours we fire music across Greater Manchester like confetti from a cannon. Tunes that make people shout “what a tune!” before they’ve even finished their first sip of tea. The messages start coming in. Listeners arguing about the topics. Someone texting from Bolton about their dog. Someone in Rochdale saying they’re listening at work instead of doing spreadsheets.

Radio magic.

And somewhere behind the glass is Tim, calmly steering the ship while I attempt to drive it like a shopping trolley with a jet engine.

Then the show finishes.

And here’s where the glamour really kicks in.

Because every day I attempt the same noble mission. I try to persuade Tim that we should nip to the Up Steps Inn in Oldham for a quick “wind-down.” Just a quiet pint. A civilised discussion about the show.

Tim is teetotal. So to him, the Upsteps Inn has roughly the same appeal as a dentist’s waiting room that also serves karaoke.

There’s another issue as well. Tim occasionally appears on television. Which means if he walks into a pub, someone will inevitably say the dreaded sentence:

“Are you that bloke off the telly?”

He reacts to that question the same way a vampire reacts to garlic.

So instead of a relaxing pint, we pack up, head out, and go our separate ways like radio cowboys riding off into a slightly less glamorous sunset.

I head home and this is where the fantasy really collapses. Because once the headphones come off and the mic goes quiet, I transform from Radio Presenter to Domestic Maintenance Technician.

Washing goes in.

Ironing happens.

The car gets washed.

Windows get cleaned.

At some point I’m standing there with a sponge thinking, “Somewhere out there, people believe this job is glamorous.”

Eventually the day winds down. I climb into bed, knowing tomorrow morning it all starts again.

Alarm.

Studio.

Three hours of chaos on the airwaves.

And another failed attempt to drag a teetotal television personality into a pub.

Radio life.

It’s not glamorous.

But it’s bloody brilliant!

#NiftyUKRadio #NiftyUK #RadioLife #RadioPresenter #BehindTheMic #ProducerLife #Oldham #Manchester #GreaterManchester #LiveRadio #BroadcastLife #RadioStudio #OnAir #Broadcasting #PresenterLife #MediaLife #BritishRadio #LocalRadio #DABRadio #RadioPersonality #StudioLife #MorningRadio #RadioHumour #Entertainment #RadioShow #BroadcastMedia #UpstepsInn #OldhamLife #RadioFamily #WhatATune #Oldham #Failsworth #Chadderton #Hollinwood #Royton #ShawAndCrompton #Lees #Saddleworth #Uppermill #Delph #Denshaw #Greenfield #Diggle #Mossley #Stalybridge #Dukinfield #AshtonUnderLyne #Droylsden #Audenshaw #Gorton #Openshaw #Beswick #Clayton #Harpurhey #Moston #NewtonHeath #MilesPlatting #Ancoats #Fallowfield #Levenshulme #Longsight #Reddish #HeatonChapel #HeatonMoor #Stockport #Cheadle #CheadleHulme #Marple #Bredbury #Romiley #Hyde #Denton #HaughtonGreen #Woodley #Hattersley #Werneth #Bardsley #Manchester #Tameside #GreaterManchester #Uppermill #Delph #Greenfield #Diggle #Mossley #Stalybridge #Dukinfield #AshtonUnderLyne #Droylsden #Audenshaw #Failsworth #Chadderton #Royton #Shaw #Crompton #Lees #Saddleworth #Gorton #Openshaw #Moston #NewtonHeath #Harpurhey #MilesPlatting #Ancoats #Beswick #Clayton #Denton #Hyde #Stockport #Marple #Romiley #Bredbury #Reddish #HeatonMoor #HeatonChapel #Cheadle #CheadleHulme #Didsbury #Withington #Fallowfield #Chorlton #Hulme #MossSide #Trafford #Salford #Wigan #Bolton #Bury #Rochdale #Oldham
